The Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations and the Ministry of Education, with support from the African Center for Economic Transformation (ACET), organized a one-day Stakeholder Engagement Platform Meeting on Youth Employment and Skills with focus on Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET). The event took place at La Palm Royal Beach Hotel, Accra, on Tuesday, 24 April 2018.
ACET aims to support economic transformation in Africa by identifying effective transformative and evidence-based policies to support African governments to successfully design and implement such policies. ACET has created the Pan-African Coalition for Transformation (PACT), which brings together stakeholders on the Continent and development partners to work on specific key themes, which are critical for the African transformation agenda. One of the key themes identified is Youth Employment and Skills development. The Youth Employment and Skills (YES) chapter therefore focuses on the levers through which youth unemployment can be reduced by enhancing skills development to help meet the future of jobs needs of young people. Ghana had the first platform series to identify specific challenges the country faces in this regard and propose effective policy solutions to the government and support the successful implementation of such policies.
The Platform meeting brought together stakeholders in youth employment, skills development, TVET institutions, private sector, employer and labour associations, among others. Discussions at the meeting revolved around three key sub-themes: TVET/Apprenticeship and Youth Employment, Curriculum and the role of the Private Sector. Three presentations were made on (i) the future of technical and vocational education and training (TVET) in Ghana to help meet the future of jobs for young people; (ii) the future curriculum: ensuring it meets the future skill needs in the labour market; and (iii) the role of the private sector in TVET.
The expected outcome of the meeting was a clear and deliverable policy recommendations to successfully deliver an excellent TVET system that supports youth employment and skills development in Ghana in line with government’s education and youth employment strategy.
