The interim report, Tackling the Vicious Circle: Debt, Nature, and Climate, addresses the interconnected crises of high sovereign debt, environmental degradation, and climate change facing emerging markets and developing countries (EMDCs). It outlines how escalating debt burdens, exacerbated by environmental shocks, restrict countries’ capacity to invest in sustainable and resilient development. The report advocates for transforming debt structures to support nature-positive and climate-compatible economic growth and recommends integrating climate and nature risks into debt assessments.
ACET contributes to the Tackling the Vicious Circle: Debt, Nature, and Climate report as part of the Secretariat team, drawing from its deep expertise in economic transformation and sustainability within Africa. Specifically, John Asafu-Adjaye, Senior Fellow, ACET provides insights and research focused on the implications of high sovereign debt on sustainable development and environmental resilience in emerging markets. ACET’s input helped shape the report’s recommendations on aligning debt structures with nature-positive, climate-compatible development, emphasizing the unique challenges and opportunities facing African nations.
