Event Overview

The African Center for Economic Transformation (ACET) has launched its Pan-African Coalition for Transformation (PACT) Youth Employment and Skills (YES) Chapter to bring together high-level policymakers and stakeholders concerned with policy development and implementation around issues of youth employment, skills development, education, and the labor market. The YES PACT is currently being implemented in six countries, including Ghana, Cote d’Ivoire, Uganda, Ethiopia, Niger, and Rwanda, with over 100 members across the continent.

As part of its knowledge sharing and learning agenda, the YES PACT is convening a series of webinars focused on highlighting good policy examples and promising initiatives from the continent and beyond. The maiden event in this learning series will focus on innovations in TVET Education policy, with a focus on strengthening TVET education to prepare African youth for the future of work.

Despite the increasing focus on TVET education in Africa, the sector remains saddled with a multitude of issues including poor and irrelevant curriculum, outdated training facilities, limited teaching and learning materials, and weak implementation of policy changes. To address the poor TVET education system in Africa, governments need to implement comprehensive policies in consultation with various stakeholders, including TVET institutions, employers, trade unions, youth groups, and young people.

The webinar, which will take place on February 28, 2023, from 10:30 GMT to 12 noon, will hear from the Rwandan Technical Vocational Education and Training Board (RTB) on their Center of Excellence initiative, which aims to build TVET centers of excellence in 30 districts in Rwanda and expand existing TVET schools with modern technology equipment. The TVET Center of Excellence will play a vital role in building a skilled and competent workforce to tap into employment opportunities in local and regional markets.

The webinar will bring together YES PACT Chapter members and policymakers involved in TVET education in Ghana, Cote d’Ivoire, Niger, Uganda, Ethiopia, and Rwanda, as well as TVET providers and teachers/trainers. The webinar will also be open to the general public and will be hosted via Zoom and streamed on ACET’s social media platforms. The session will include a presentation from the Rwandan TVET Board (RTB), remarks from policy makers, and a general audience Q&A session, with questions addressed to relevant policy makers.
