Event Overview

The African Center for Economic Transformation (ACET), on October 10, launched its second flagship report on African Transformation, titled: Agriculture Powering Africa’s Economic Transformation. The launch took place during the 2017 Annual Meetings of the Boards of Governors of the World Bank Group (WBG) and the International Monetary Fund (IMF), in Washington DC. This followed a successful preview of the report at the 2017 African Caucus meeting of Governors of the WBG and IMF meeting on August 4, in Gaborone, Botswana.

About the Report

The second African Transformation Report provides a data-rich assessment of the state of agriculture in Africa, its impact on macro-economic outcomes and its recent performance. It focuses on land tenure systems and the kinds of reforms that would enable customary tenure systems to better support commercial agriculture. It advocates the increased production of food staples to feed households and support value-adding activity, while emphasising agricultural transformation as a driver of job opportunities for educated youth in farming and in agricultural value chains off-farm. Finally, it makes recommendations on gender equity and environmentally friendly policies in the context of climate change.

The World Bank/IMF Annual Meetings bring together central bankers, ministers of finance and development, parliamentarians, private sector executives, representatives of civil society organizations and academics to discuss the world economic outlook, poverty eradication, economic development, aid effectiveness and other issues of global concern. The meetings include seminars, regional briefings, press conferences and many other events focused on the global economy, international development and the world financial system.
